Heat Pump Installation & Replacement in Hampton Roads
Heat pump replacements and new installations for homes across Hampton Roads and Northeastern North Carolina — efficient heating and cooling from one system.
A heat pump heats and cools your home with one system by moving heat rather than burning fuel. In summer it pulls heat out of your home; in winter it draws heat in from the outdoor air. With Hampton Roads' long, humid summers and mild winters, heat pumps are one of the most popular and efficient choices for homes in our area.
H&S Mechanical installs and replaces heat pumps for homeowners in Suffolk, Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, Norfolk and throughout the region. Whether you're replacing an aging heat pump or switching from an older air conditioner and furnace, we'll help you choose equipment that fits your home and your budget.
Today's heat pumps are far more efficient than units installed 15 or 20 years ago, and variable-speed models hold steadier temperatures and control humidity better. We'll walk you through the options and explain the trade-offs honestly.

Why homeowners choose heat pumps
- One system for both heating and cooling
- Efficient heating in our mild coastal winters
- Good humidity control when the system is sized correctly
- No fuel burned inside the home for heat-pump heating
- A strong option where natural gas isn't available
Signs your heat pump needs replacing
- Repairs are adding up on an older unit
- It struggles to keep up on the hottest or coldest days
- Electric bills are higher than they used to be
- Backup or emergency heat runs more than it should
- It ices up often or runs almost constantly
- It still uses R-22 refrigerant

FAQ
Heat Pump Installation & Replacement: common questions
Straight answers from our team. Have another question? Give us a call.
Yes. Our winters are mild compared with much of the country, which is where heat pumps are at their most efficient. Most systems also include supplemental heat for the occasional hard cold snap, and cold-climate models are available if you want extra low-temperature performance.
It varies with the equipment, the quality of the installation, how hard the system works and how well it's maintained — and salt air near the water can be hard on outdoor coils. Regular maintenance is the best way to get the most years out of yours.
Often, yes. Many homes can switch to a heat pump using the existing ductwork. We'll look at your home, ductwork and electrical service and explain what's involved before you decide.
If your heat pump is fairly new and the problem is a single part, a repair usually makes sense. If it's older, needs frequent repairs or uses R-22 refrigerant, replacement is often the better investment. We'll give you an honest recommendation either way.
